Lunar eclipse

Post by Sonikku » Sat Mar 03, 2007 6:43 pm

Yay! As I speak (I think), there is a lunar eclipse happening! Yay!!! Look outside and see if you can find the moon. I THINK I can see the moon right now, but I may be mistaking it for a bright street light or a dim sun. It should last until around 8PM EST (EST = GMT - 5 hours), so hurry up and see it for yourself!

There were far, far too many clouds for anyone in my town to see it.

hmmm, when the moon blocks the sun, all you see in the sky is a black circle surrounded by a ring of light, this happens during the day and is called a solar eclipse, which happens less often than the lunar ecclipse, which should look like a dimmer version of the sun which appears at night

Except this time, as I heard, the moon was supposed to turn red.

To see the dim redness, yes, but at around 8:00 or so right as it was ending, it was still possible to see the moon with part of the Earth's shadow still on it :)

That's a solar eclipse. A lunar eclipse is where the Earth blocks the sun from the moon

Warning: Science babble below
And for all you to know, lunar eclipses can be a whole bunch of colours :), it all depends on what degree the Earth is currently at, because the sun shines onto the Earth, then the atmosphere around the Earth refracts the light around the planet, which causes it to usually turn red. However, if there are large patches of stuff on the ground (Green from trees, yellow from deserts, blue from oceans, etc.) on either the sides of the Earth (looking from the sun to Earth), may cause the light to pick up more wavelengths of a specific colour, which causes to lunar eclipse to change from it's base colour of sunset red to a yellowy glow, or a greeny-red, or sometimes even violet. Quite an interesting thing lunar eclipses are. *nods*

My brother was going to look at the solar eclipse except he was looking the wrong direction with our telescope. Yeah, he thought the moon was behind a cloud but instead it was behind us. I saw it, but he was mad that he didn't, and I didn't want to spoil all his fun. :)

It was LUNAR!!!... And I almost did that since I didn't feel like going into my backyard since it was like a metre deep in snow, and the eclipse was behind my house (My bedroom's window looks out to the front of the house). However thick clouds were everywhere and seeing it was but a fool's dream... Now I have to wait until August or so for the next one >.>
