what do you think about this?

Post by personn5 » Tue May 01, 2007 1:58 pm

ok heres an argument me and a few friends are having, it involves sword fighting. here is the scenario: one of the fighters has 1 sword(probably a 2 handed sword, but nothing you can duel wield), and the other has 2 swords(2 short swords, dual wielded).

2 of my friends think that the guy with the 1 huge sword would win because(and this is a direct quote from one of them):" the big sword could freaking own the little swords. it could just cut through them! the other guy couldn't block the big sword its too heavy!you guys are morons!"(end quote)

me, and 2 others think that the 2 swords would beat the other swordsman because these reasons:

1.with 1 sword you could block, and the other launch a counterattack

2.(only one of the guys thinks this) with the big sword, you can only swing horizontal and vertical

3. the smaller swords givers you faster attacks, allowing you to take out your opponent with quick jabs and slices.

4. the big sword givers you more power, but you lose speed and swing speed

5. while the bigger sword is better with swinging, the smaller swords can be used for stabbing as well, allowing for a better frontal attack.

what do you guys think? who would win? can you add any more reasons for either of the 2 fighters to win?

I'm for the two swords. I very much doubt that someone is going to be able to use the big sword to cut through two smaller swords. Mythbusters did a thing about that, although I don't remember the exact results, I do remember seeing a couple of their tests with two similar swords cutting at each other. They chipped and bent each other, but didn't cut through. It's going to be even more difficult to cut two, particularly if they both defend against the attack at the same time.

thats exactly what we have been telling them, but they are stuck on the idea that the bigger weapon always wins.

and about the mythbusters thing, they said it would take a person with super-human strength to cut through a sword

I also vote for dual wielding 2 short swords, since even if SOMEHOW the big huge giant sword of Cloud's Buster Sword proportions manages to be sharp and inertia-ful enough to be able to cut through TWO sticks of steel, probably of equal density, the weight of the big sword would just be too much to catch someone who could be quick with just two short swords before being stabbed in the chest or sliced and diced.

But let's go a step further and say they're like Cloud or Nightmare who can swing a freaking huge sword at the speed of light (Omnislash for Cloud and... Well, any combo Nightmare has, they're way faster than they should be!). MAYBE then the short swords might be in trouble. But even then, due to inertia, swinging a sword that fast, THEN TRYING TO STOP IT AFTER SLASHING (Hit or not)... Oh boy, wouldn't that be fun.

I've always been one to pick speed over power, and that's mostly why. Weight is just too much of a hinderance

even though it was originally between average humans, the cloud/nightmare was a great addition

so heres a video game version:
huge sword: cloud/ nightmare
2 swords: Lloyd Irrving

(if you don't know, lloyd is from tales of symphonia{sp?})

Two short swords because of the speed advantage :)

I'm surprised you actually put Lloyd Irving for an example of two swords, most people haven't played the Tales series. But for me I would also have to go with a dual-wield. Dual-wields are just so much faster than a two-handed sword. Plus, it's a samurais choice of weapon. :D Samurais own every kind of soldier. Except for Warlord the Mage, he just burninates the peasants everywhere he goes. (Trogdor ftw)

Until I get revived as your dark minion. Then I just break free of your evil spell and kill you. Then I revive you as my dark minion. Cycle continues :)

As someone who has trained with swords, I have to say, your question is impossible to answer with an unbiased opinion.

Everyone who uses a sword uses them differently. You'd have to take into account their training, and who trained them.

Next, you're taking two completely different styles and pitting them against each other, once again making it impossible.

Last, there are hundreds of different styles using two-handed longswords, and slightly less using 2 one-handed swords.

Now, let's look at it like this:
All throughout our swordmanship-past, two-handed swords were extremely common. Why? because it works. They're fast as slashing, but lowers movement. They can be used for both offense and defense.

Dual-wielded swords are rarely used. two swords, yes. two swords at once, no. they're fast, but uncontrollable. also, short swords are useless for defense, and all-out offense only works in mass numbers.

So, make your own assumption, but either way, this debate is one that doesn't have a real answer.
