Neodymium spheres

Postby phantom » Mon Aug 18, 2008 5:57 am

Just thought I'd let you peoples have a look into this rather nifty world of creativity and toys.

Neodymium is a very strong, rare earth magnetic metal; "the strongest permanent magnets known" (Wikipedia) (see also Neodymium magnet for more info).
They are found in all sorts of things, such as hard drives and speakers.

However, this post is more about non-productive, fun uses of it:

With little spheres of the metal you can make all sorts neat shapes. They have very neat behaviours depending on their arrangements, as seen in various videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewx9tEJJlWk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xt-PYN1ftrM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yKlUwpHuo0 (and, well, most of the Neocube videos)

If you're interested enough in this, you can buy these spheres in packs of 216 (note: different size than the rest):
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/4-7-5mm-ne ... r=97771320
or packs of 100:

or packs of 20:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/neodymium- ... r=97771320

The site delivers anywhere in the world.

Note that the videos I linked above were done with packs of 216 spheres.
They are also available in a brand named bundle NeoCube, which is the same spheres, but, with a brand name.

216 because it makes a 6x6x6 cube.

I've gone ahead and ordered one pack of 100. I'm expecting it to take a couple weeks to deliver, I'm in Canada and they're in China.

Safety time. Take note that these magnets can be extremely dangerous if ingested, so keep them away from small children and pets.
They can also damage computer equipment such as monitors (particularly if you're going to play with the colour deformation alot on a CRT) and magnetic storage media such as floppy disks.
They'll also make your Nintendo DS (and most laptops) go into sleep mode.

edit 29-02-2012: updated links, there is now a 216 (6x6x6) sphere bundle

You can't get over those can you? ._____.
"They're like little balls of happiness."
"I WANT MY SPHERES"
o-o
I would get some but
I would probably lose all the little balls.
Or get bored with them after a while.

lol, well, you probably wouldn't lose them very easily. They're strong magnets, so if you manage to lose some they'll turn up stuck to something eventually.

EDIT 04/09/08: My spheres have arrived! Yippee! Exactly one hundred, enough to form them into a 4x4x4 cube, 3x3x3 cube, 2x2x2 cube, and 1x1x1 (hur hur that's one) cube all at the same time.
